CALLING ALL ASTRONAUTS INTERVIEW

Hey everyone!
I have a really exciting post for you today! The amazing band 'Calling All Astronauts' did an interview with me and I'm very excited to share this post!
These questions were mainly answered by David but the others did join in at times. You should go check out their music because they really are great!

1. As a band, what do you personally think is your greatest achievement so far?

Making music that people seem to like, we are totally DIY and the fact that so many people are supportive of us is amazing

2. Who were your celebrity crushes when you were younger?

I’m not sure I had any, no that’s not true Siouxsie Sioux and Danielle Dax, I have more nowadays, Paloma Faith, Rachel Riley and Sheridan Smith are always on my radar J

3. What has been the toughest moment for CAA so far?

When Kristi our bassist left on the eve of our debut album we had to cancel shows and it took us ages to find somebody we wanted to work with, we were very lucky our old friend Paul became available.

4. Do you all ever hang out when you're not creating new music or doing anything to do with CAA?

We hang out lots, social events, birthdays, BBQs, all sorts, we are 3 great mates

5. Who/What are your major influences?

The list is massive, I think every piece of music you listen to inspires you in a way, we take a lot of influence from late 70’s and early 80’s acts like Killing Joke, New Order, Psychedelic Furs, Bauhaus, Fad Gadget, but also from fairly recent acts like Knife Party, Skrillex and Diplo

6. Do you ever get noticed when you're out and about?

I do quite often, I think it’s my hair, I was walking through production in Hyde Park when The Who played last year, and had a group of photographers taking photos of me, my mate who was with me thought it was seriously funny.

7. Have you had to overcome any fears, as individuals, to get you where you are today?

I’m quite deaf after years of loud shows and am absolutely terrified before going on stage that I wont be able to hear my cues.

8. Describe yourselves in three words each.

David - Compulsive, obsessive, caring,
J - “Rock guitarist and gamer Dad”
David - “that’s 5 words”
J - “Blonde”
Paul – Trees Bass Food

9. Who are your idols or role models?

Anyone who is a decent selfless individual, people who put others before themselves, Doctors and nurses, Teachers, aid workers.

10. Is there anything in particular that influences your songwriting process?

We always start with a beat and then just add to it, all our songs are written in the recording studio, David puts down a beat and maybe has a verse or chorus, then J and Paul jam loads of ideas, which then seem to get cut up into a guitar track or bassline, then we add keys and finally vocals

11. You all seem to get along well, but who is the joker of the band?

We all are at different times, the subject matter of all our songs is very serious, but you wouldn’t believe how much of a laugh we have,
We just take the piss out of each other all the time and have an abundance of in jokes, the current one is “would you like some pork?” after David cooked a joint that was so big he was still trying to feed it to everyone a week later

12. What do each of you think is the most important thing in life?

Always be true to yourself, never capitulate to peer pressure, don’t be afraid to stand up for what is right and always treat others in a manner that you would like them to treat you

13. Where do you hope to see yourselves one year from now?

Sat round in pool in Vegas when David and Heidi get married J

14. What is your ultimate goal for CAA?

Just to continue to make what we consider to be good records, it would be amazing to have some commercial success, but that isn’t our motivation, if we can make every album better than the previous one, I think we’ll have achieved our goals

15. Do you have any advice for anyone trying to start their own music career?

Study hard at school, get lots of qualifications and go and work in the city, nobody will recognise you, but you will be able to afford to live like a rock star. If you insist on making music, make it for the right reason, the music.

I hope you all enjoyed this interview! I definitely did! Huge thank you to the band for taking the time to answer my questions. Make sure you all check out their music!
